There are no set homework tasks in Intermediate 1 Computing Studies. Research has shown that pupils at this level rely too much on the teacher providing homework and do not take the responsibility of studying seriously until it is too late. This causes problems when they move into more techinical courses and cannot rely on teacher-based homework for all of their self-study.
We work with pupils on developing their self-study skills from the outset of every course. We assess the pupils at the end of topics/units (in addition to NABs) to gauge their progress and advise them accordingly on how to improve their prospects by better developing their self-study skills using the resources provided.
Self-study is a key part of any subject. In Computing Studies this is no exception. If pupils are to achieve their full potential by the end of their course they must realise the importance of regular study throughout the year/s.
At Nairn Academy, we provide many resources to help cater for different learning styles. We are happy to assist pupils in the identification of the learning style that suits them best and work with them to develop effective programs of self-study to help them pass their courses.
Pupils should use the resources provided, in particular, http:\\quiz.hitcomp.net, which is designed to:
- Help pupils with NAB-style questions
- Allow pupils to become familiar with exam questions
- Keeping pupils focused on ALL topics, not just the topic currently being studied
- Theory NAB – 20 questions/all units (online)
- Practical NAB – see below.
- End of Topic assessments: classmarker.com
- Coursework task – 40% of course: Jan – March 2011
